Couture Masks and Upcycled Denim: Romeo Hunte X Tommy Hilfiger at NYFW

Who knew that the alluring mask trend would become a mandate? Inspired from the world of street meets couture was Romeo Hunte‘s Fall Winter 2020 collection at New York Fashion Week (NYFW), inspired by idol and mentor Tommy Hilfiger. The fabrics were donated from Tommy Hilfiger’s personal archive, which Hunte upcycled to create fresh styles.

The outfit included a Print All Over Me oversized combo with rain boots by Calvin Klein for day, and a staple snakeskin jacket by Twisted Tailor for the concrete jungle by night.

Starting with a live violinist who sashayed the crowd into a trance at the galactic Morris W. and Fannie B. Haft Theater, the runway snaked through the crowds as models incorporated denim, leather, suede and tassels on many looks that blended Western with vogue. A cut and sew technique juxtaposed the fabrics and prints so starkly that the style was nothing short of eccentric. Standouts included an asymmetric semi plaid blazer, asymmetric leather and suede outerwear, a fitted leather suit and a denim and leather mishmash. And of course, many looks were accompanied by glinting helmets and couture style face masks, almost foreshadowing the impact of coronavirus on fashion.
